As we begin another session of Service Learning, the students are still just as amazing as ever. Bringing forth their vigor to learn, to share, and to work. This session, the students will be continuing with the Beveridge Middle School partnership, together working with the Malcolm X project. They will engage in discovering artistic value by visiting the Joselyn Art Museum, learn about poverty in America as they travel to the Foodbank to fill for the BackPack Lunch Program, learn about Habitat for Humanity and offer assistance at the Open Door Mission. As instructors, we feel that we have been very priviledged to be able to take these students on a journey that can change the way we do things.
The students took three mini tours alongside Beveridge Middle Schhol students at Joslyn Art Museum where they learned about three different exhibitions: Native American history on shoes, Chinese Card Art, and Hispanic Religious Art form.
This tour was designed as part of the first two pillars of Service Learning: Preparing and Planning for their upcoming project at the Malcolm X Center.
This allowed students to help them prepare ideas and plan what they would like to create as part of the mural.

Beveridge Middle School partnerships
The ILUNO program has long since partnered with various middle schools in the Omaha community. Beveridge has been a consistent one for several years, working on projects that beautifies the community. From gardens, to murals, to cultural affairs, this partnership has raised much awareness of how distance nor age can deter from the essence of knowledge.

From the months of March and April, and even before then, the ILUNO Service Learning program has worked alongside of the Beveridge students to create a mural for the Malcolm X Foundation. This will be the second mural that will be hung on walls in that foundation. The murals relate to Malcolm X and what he has accomplished during his lifetime.
Habitat for Humanity was a tour the Service Learning students took in order to understand the need to build low-income housing. While the tour was confined to Omaha proper, the students learned about poverty, hunger, and housing in their classrooms.
We toured several areas in the north part of Omaha, where much of Habitat's work is accomplished due to the economic conditions of that area. Students had the pleasure of seeing a demolition site, a site where Habitat's 7th Annual Blitz takes place, a completed home, a site where a local artist will be displaying his art, as well as Habitat's retail store.

This final service learning project engaged the students in hands-on cleaninup and organization of the Open Door Mission store facility. While it was rough, dirty and unexpected, the students mansaged to push through this mission.
Some groups worked in organizing clothing donations and putting them up on racks, while others organized the toy section and hygiene products.
This was definitely an environment that most ILUNO students are not familiar with nor are they comfortable in, but somehow they kept up their spirits to complete the task at hand.
