Service Learning in the ILUNO program involves a myriad of activities for our students who desire to be a part of the local community. Some activities include the P-16 initiative provided by the Service Learning Academy here on campus, while other activities include local charities. These students spend 3 hours in a classroom learning about local programs in helping them to prepare.
There are 5 pillars of the program, in which students learn about each project: Prepare, Plan, Act, Reflect and Celebrate.
While engaging in these activities, students practice their communication skills to help them understand the structure of the English language as it is spoken.

Part of the Service Learning initiative is a P-16 intiative where we partner with local schools. Our partnership is with Beveridge Middle School, a magnet school of Omaha Public Schools, with a division of an International Study Program. During this activity, our students are assigned to create an interactive 3-5 minute lesson for the middle-school students, the teacher Mrs. Kandido calls it "Around-the-World-in-40-Minutes". Many of the activities include the exchanges of language, games, dances, culture and currency. It is a fun and interesting way to engage both of groups of students.
Over the past several months, another partnership that has been built is with the Malcolm X Foundation along with Beveridge Middle School. Students have assisted in cleaning up the property to creating visual art pieces to hang in their building. Collectively, the two groups of students have painted square canvas cards to illustrate their idea of "breaking borders" in which our society has created.
Students have used their knowledge of Malcolm X quotes and his information to create what they think will induce a global friendly environment in breaking these borders.

The project here at the foundation is to create a garden bomb...it requires a paper mache type of solution and seeds. It is dried and shaped into something of a snowball or something more creative like a star.
The idea is to "throw" these garden bombs in fields so that they can flourish into beautiful wild flowers where there is no beauty. It was a timely process that required 4 different sections: mixer, drainer, feeder, and shaper. What fun!!!.
