International students don't often think there are any hunger issues in he United States and often surprised, if not shocked a the large numbers of children who are hungry. In many countries, where the government takes care of all their people, hunger is not a prevalent problem. When we take our students to the Foodbank, our primary responsibilities have been to participate in the BackPack program, where over 8,000 backpacks are needed to feed children during the weekend during an average school year.
Murad, a student, was astonished at the number of bags he filled with juice boxes, though he commented that juice boxes just wasn't enough to sustain a child over the weekend. Students often feel a great deal of accomplishment during this service project, especially when they are aware that the service results in happy children.

The Open Door Mission is a non-profit organization located near the Eppley Airport that supplies living quarters, food, clothing, and household items to people of the community that need assistance. The people this organization serves does not necessarily have to be homeless. It is anyone who needs help.
Many of our students thought The Open Door Mission was a good place for people who need help: a place to get clothing, other household goods, and of course a room should they need it.
Though the place was unclean and unlike any environment most of the students have been in, they stepped up to the plate and completed whatever tasks they were asked to complete.
Overall, the students felt that they had accomplished their mission.

"AROUND THE WORLD" - an activity where our international students educate public school students about their culture. Our students brainstorm ideas with purpose and audience in mind, with encouragement from their instructors. Often times, these mini-cultural lessons include subjects like money and economy, entertainment and music, and cultural habits and foods. Students in our program use their language skills to communicate effectively and accurately.
While many of our students have not been in an American school setting, they are very interested in this part of the program. The students are so enthused to be sharing their culture with American students. Bashar, a student from Oman, says that he enjoyed the experience. This collaboration is a thread that courses through the Service Learning program that incorporates our students to public schools so that both institutions can benefit and learn from each other. |
