Food Bank for the
Heartland Volunteer Day
It was absolutely pouring Tuesday when we went to get on the bus. I was thoroughly soaked when I sat down. It took 10 minutes to get to West Omaha where the Food Bank building was. We were initially led into a large lecture room and the director of the Food Bank gave us a brief lecture about hunger and the Food Bank.
We were then led to the heart of building and we were put to work. Our goal was to make weekend snacks for the ‘Kids Backpack Program’. We divided into groups at two tables. Most of us were on the assembly line. That was where we put a white milk, chocolate milk, juice, fruit cup, lasagna, ravioli, and two cereals into plastic bags. Then, the sealers used a heating machine to close the bag. Next, each bag was put into a box with 8 other lunches and taped shut. We work hard and fast! In the hour and 15 minutes we worked, we made 110 boxes- more than 888 bags!
The Food Bank uses volunteers like us to do all their work. I would like to go back and volunteer again soon with some of my friends. Although I was exhausted on the bus on the way home, it was a really good tired feeling. I worked very hard to help hungry people in Nebraska.

Graffiti Removal - City of Omaha project
Students were introduced to graffiti removal during a presentation put on by the City of Omaha. The City of Omaha spends $650K for graffiti removal annually. The entire USA spends nearly 2 Billion in graffiti removal - in comparison to NASA's budget of 18.24B - I'd say that graffiti needs to be kept to a minimum.
